Lincoln fans mock Stevenage manager Steve Evans with message on banner - Fan Banter (2024)

Lincoln City fans decided to mock Stevenage manager Steve Evans with a message on a banner they had made for the League One fixture.

The following was written: “Mr Blobby club record – low, Jailed at Boston, Sacked by Leeds, Binned by Posh, Record high BMI”

Evans has often gone viral on Twitter in recent weeks with his post-match celebrations in front of Stevenage fans.

But on this occasion, he was back fuming with referees, as his side played out a goalless draw at Sincil Bank on Saturday afternoon.

Stevenage are having a season to remember, and are hoping of claiming a playoff place. But Michael Skubala’s team extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches, preventing Steve Evans’ side from gaining a five-point lead in the race for the play-offs.

The game ended Lincoln’s three-game winning run, during which they managed to keep four consecutive clean sheets, not conceding a goal for 378 minutes.

But Stevenage manager Steve Evans was once again booked for disputing with the match officials in the first half.

Despite both teams having opportunities, neither side managed to score, with the best chance falling to Joe Taylor who missed the target.

Evans claimed that Lincoln should have had a man sent off.

He said: “For me there’s a massive, massive, pivotal moment in the game.

“I don’t want players sent off, but the referee will justify why he doesn’t give a second yellow for a free-kick when Louis bursts towards the box.

“It’s just a bad decision from a referee who I thought got around the pitch, was strong about his opinions but gave me a yellow card for lifting my arms.

“Michael’s (Lincoln boss) running around waving his arms when Jamie Reid collides with the goalie and he just gets a smile.

“Bobby Madley talks well. I’ll give him compliments for being a strong referee, but you have to be able to come to Sincil Bank and give a second yellow.”

Evans said, per The Comet: “I think there were two teams that knew it was [an important game] and I think there was a lot of cancelling out going on.

“I don’t remember our goalkeeper making a saving and I know there’s certainly didn’t so that tells you a lot of it was competed in the middle of the park.

“There was lots and lots of industry and the boys gave a shift.

“They are unbeaten in 10 now but they’ve not played the likes of us in the last six or seven.

“They found it a bit more intense today to try and win.

“And then, for me, there’s a massive, massive, pivotal moment. I’m not for having a player sent off but the referee will justify why he doesn’t give a second yellow for a free-kick five yards from the box.

“It’s just a bad decision from the referee who I thought got around the pitch and was strong in his opinions.

“He gave me a yellow card for lifting my arms so I deserve that.

“Like I said, he is a strong referee but you have to issue a second yellow. It’s blatant and you saw all their players put their hands on their heads.”

“We cannot influence anywhere other than what’s happened here. That’s the only game we could influence.

“We go home content but do we go home happy? The answer is no.

“If they go down to 10 men and we don’t produce achance or take a chance to score a goal, then we go awaythinking it’s been down the middle, and two good teams who’ve gone to battle.

“Would a red card change the course of the game? Yes, it does, but did we do enough to win the game? No.

“Were we ever going to lose the game? No.

“If we were a point away from guaranteeing a place in the play-offs, you would stick wouldn’t you.

“You would stick with those who are on the pitch and full-blooded in the game as they know what they are doing.

“But I justthought Reidy and Robbo worked incredibly hard in both halves without getting any joy.

“And we felt in the build-up thatit was a big decision whether we played Oliver or not.

“He’s trained really well in the last week and he came on the other night with a real presence, winning headers.

“Lincoln didn’t like it when he came on as all of a sudden he won every header.

“And when we get Vee into tune for the last 10 games, we have one hell of a target man that will win everything that comes into the box.”

Lincoln boss Michael Skubala said: “It wasn’t a nice game of football and we had to deal with it. In moments we dealt with it really well and in some parts we had the bigger chances.

“I think in the end we take the point but it shows how far this group has come because they’re disappointed not to have won the game. They’ve come a long way and will keep going.”

He added: “The ball was probably in the air more than on the floor but both backlines stood up well. There were a couple of penalty shouts but I’ve not seen them back.

“When we went to their place for my first game (losing 1-0 in November), I thought we got bullied a little bit, but I didn’t see that at all today. We tried to use the width and play a little bit, but it didn’t come off for us in stages where we could have been a little cleaner and a little better.

“We did tire a little towards the end but this week we’ll regroup, refresh and go again.”

Speaking about midfielder Conor McGrandles missing out, he added: “He’ll have a scan in the middle of next week. His ankle has ballooned up and it could be something, but it could be nothing. We’ll see where he’s at.”
