For some brides, one of the most memorable bridal party members will be your flower girl. More than looking adorable, she serves a quintessential role in your ceremony. "The role of the flower girl is really about welcoming in a sense of newness and transformation using the abundance and prosperities of mother earth, specifically with flowers," scholar Amber C. Snider, author of the forthcoming book Wonderment, tells Brides. It's no coincidence we think of flower girls as ethereal fairies.

Flowers are "symbols of renewal and new beginnings," notes Snider, and flower girl dresses should capture this sense of magic and wonder. "Both the bride and the flower girl are maiden figures, but in the bridal procession, the flower girl goes first, marking out that pathway of transformation for the bride in her new role," says Snider.

With this in mind, not any flower girl frock will do. At Brides, our editors curated a list of exquisite finds and tested select picks on flower girls ages 3, 5, and 6. Flower girls then twirled, made merry, and played for hours both indoors and outside on a hot summer day. We took note of things like comfort, fit, quality, and of course, style. We also noted how easy it was to get in and out of each dress, how easy it was to steam it out of the box, and how our flower girls felt wearing these gowns.

With taffeta made in Italy, this dress is the epitome of pretty in pink. The front bow on bib delivers a chic French couture design aesthetic the Jacadi label is known for. It arrived nearly wrinkle-free out of the box, but we gave it a quick steam before zipping up and it held up beautifully after hours of dancing in the hot sun. The cotton lining helped keep our flower girl comfortable and cool, and she loved the ease and flow of the style. We paired it with Jacadi Gold Sandals to complete the look.

We love this whimsical, charming, vintage-inspired A-line dress for a garden wedding. The fabric quality (100 percent cotton dobby) is exquisite, as is the design element. It features a square neckline, exaggerated puffed sleeves, bow on the front, and elastic smocking on the back with beautiful button details. We also love that Floraison Lane doesn't mass produce, and keeps each design limited. This dress required a light steam out of the box, and stayed wrinkle-free for hours. Our three-year-old flower girl got into it with ease, and stayed comfortable as she danced and played for hours in the sun. It came with a flower garland for her hair and we paired the dress with Elephantito Sasha Ballernia Flats in white.

Size Range: 3M to 12Y |Materials:Cotton |Colors: White floral print

If you're looking for a flower girl dress that brings the drama, this tulle jacquard A-line gown from Petite Maison Kids is it. We love the jacquard bow collar adorned with rhinestones, faux pearls, and beadingto deliver peak coquette style. We did not need to steam this dress out of the box, and it stayed flowing and beautiful through hours of dancing in the sun. Our flower girl loved twirling in it so much, she did not want to take it off. We credit the comfort to the soft tulle that was gentle and lightweight against her skin. We sized up for our five-year-old flower girl, and had to pin the back of the dress, which was simple enough. It does run large, however, so we don't recommend sizing up on this one. We paired this high-drama choice with Childrenchic Classic Glitter Mary Janes in rose and Emi Jay Popstar Clips in Fairytale.

Size Range: 12M to 8Y |Materials:Tulle, jacquard |Colors: Peach

This was a favorite amongst our flower girls for the fairytale aesthetic, full tulle skirt with colorful flower appliqués, and comfort. The flutter sleeves are delicate and charming, and allow for ease of movement. Our flower girl danced, played, and twirled for hours in the hot sun and stayed comfortable in her dress. Although the description instructs people not to iron, we gently steamed the top inside-out to remove the minor wrinkles out of the box, but do not recommend going near the tulle and flower appliqués with any heat. Our flower girl said the feel of the dress was satiny and comfortable against her skin.

With a streamlined column silhouette, this chiffon style is great for older flower girls who rather avoid puffy, tulle designs. We won't be surprised if your flower girl ends up wearing it beyond the wedding.

With a full tulle skirt and floral appliqués, this dress feels both traditional and whimsical. We also love that the v-neck back adds some extra drama. This maxi dress is great for older flower girls who won't be prone to tripping over the longer length.

Size Range: 2 to 10Y |Materials:Embroidered tulle |Colors: White

We can all remember a time when our parents made us wear itchy, uncomfortable dresses. You don't want to do this to your flower girl, so if your wedding is going to be in a hot climate, we recommend going for a cotton dress, like this one from J.Crew. Cotton is extra breathable, so your flower girl won't get too hot. Flutter sleeves and a bow in the back elevate this simple dress that is perfect for an outdoor wedding. The longer silhouette so also great for older flower girls.

Size Range: 2 to 14 |Materials:Cotton |Colors: Ivory

Velvet instantly makes a dress feel more festive and suitable for a winter wedding. With more than 10 shades to choose from, you can either go with a shade that matches the bride, like topaz, or a rich jewel tone like cabernet. The flutter sleeve is extra romantic.

What to Look for in a Flower Girl Dress

Size: Julie Sabatino, a wedding stylist says you shouldn't buy the dress earlier than four months before the wedding. It's always recommended to size up, as you can have your local tailor or dry-cleaner perform an alteration pretty quickly, sometimes within a few days.

Age: Consider the age of your flower girl at the time she'll be walking down the aisle. Tea-length dresses are best for infants and toddlers because they reduce any tripping hazards, while floor-length dresses are an elegant option for girls who are a little older.

Fabric: When ordering a flower girl dress online, you may need to steam it so that it's wrinkle-free for the walk down the aisle. Tulle, chiffon, and organza generally do not require steaming out of the box. Cotton and silk are two fabrics that steam easily without risking heat damage. For synthetic fabrics, it's best to steam them inside-out to ensure steaming doesn't damage the dress.
