What is the membrane of a condenser microphone? ›

The diaphragm in a condenser microphone (whether it's large or small) is an extremely thin membrane that sits parallel to a solid metal plate, both housed inside the mic's capsule. As sound waves hit the membrane, it vibrates and induces a current in the charged metal plate, creating an audio signal.

The proper way to address a condenser mic is also “off axis.” The best technique I have found is hanging the mic upside down, facing you with the manufacturers logo or pick-up pattern. Address the mic from 5- 8” (120-200mm) and just talk naturally.
